Soul Survivor
An insigtful look into Philip Yancey through those who inspired his life.
To be completely honest I have been a fan of Philip Yancey ever since I read
"What's so Amazing about Grace?" One of the best qualities of Yancey in his
writing is that he writes the things that most of us have thought but were too
afraid to mention. He asks the tough questions that each one of us have asked
in the privacy of our own minds. Sometimes the question is resolved but often
times it remains a question.
The book "Soul Survivor" provides a candid look into
the lives of 13 people who have in some fashion provided direction for Yancey's life.
Probably the most amazing thing about this book are some of the people that have
made a profound impact for Philip Yancey. Sure there are some of the great men of
faith like G.K. Chesterton and Henri Nowen (although you will recognize that they
are human after all when reading this book), but whoever thought a Christian author
could be inspired by people such as Ghandi and Leo Tolstoy? Some people may be somewhat
offended by the influences in his life, but I am inspired as I consider some of the
influences in my life. Even the skeptic will understand the profound qualities of the
people in the book.
As a book it is written in classic Yancey style with relevent
stories and mind altering analyses. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a
fan of Yancey or enjoys Christian literature.
