Hunting Season Is Here. (continued)
I finally shot the egg! I was dilligently trying to hit the egg from
15 yards away. One arrow would hit immediatly to the left of the egg and the next
to the right. You would kind of expect that the following arrow would be right
on target. Not with me though. The next arrow was usually so far off center that
I was fortunate that it still hit the hay bale. But my luck (I could claim skill but
I am trying to be honest) was soon to change. I decided to back up and try a few
30 yard shots, since 15 yarders are hard to come by in the woods. I drew the bow string
back, aimed in the general direction of the egg, and let her fly. To my amazement
egg shells were flying as the perfectly place arrow sailed right through the egg.
I did what any American male would do and looked around to find some witness to this
great feat. No witnesses, but at least I know I did it.
Jacob is continuing to search for the coveted distance record with his little
compound bow. He will attempt to take a few shots at the bale but has yet to
hit it.
It is hunting season now but the busyness of life and the other things that
need my attention have kept me out of the woods except for one evening. Caleb
and I walked around in Pike National Forest for a couple of hours before dusk
one afternoon. We got rained on and soaked pretty good. I took the opportunity
to try my elk calls. I can tell that I am a little rusty and apparently so
did the elk. Nothing was bugling at all, but I knew it was a little early in
the season. I did blow a pretty terrible sounding bugle at one point and
spooked a deer. And that was the only deer we saw while walking. We did see
a small buck while driving, but nothing to take a shot at. There are still a
few weeks to go, so maybe I will get some time in before the season ends.
